Boris Johnson Announces Plans to Implement a Fast-Track Immigration System to Attract Top Scientists to Work in the UK

The UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has announced that he is planning to develop a new fast-track immigration system in order to attract top scientists from the world to work in the UK. While making an official announcement, Johnson said that the decision for the same will be taken after consulting the Home Office and the Department of Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy. As per the reports from the government, the new fast-track visa option will attract elite researchers and specialists in science, engineering, and technology from math Olympiads in the beginning stage of their careers to winners of internationally recognized prizes and fellowships.

With the new visa option, the cap on numbers under the Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visas will be abolished and also it will remove the need to have an employment offer before heading for the UK. The need to have an endorsement by a UK university will also be fast tracked with an “automatic endorsement” policy, as well as increasing the number of endorsing bodies from the five that are currently authorised. And following the implementation of this new immigration system, the dependents will gain full access to the labor market. The Pharma industry has already welcomed the new immigration proposals of the UK government.

According to Habib Ali of 121 Immigration Lawyers “For the proposed plan to have a significant impact on the number of scientist coming to the UK, the requirements that need to be met to obtain an endorsement should also be eased. At Present individuals looking for endorsement have to be recognised internationally in their field and receive support for their application from a prominent UK individual who is familiar with their work.”

According to Andrew Croydon, Head of Skills and Education at the ABPI, the incoming of the brightest and best scientists to the UK will play a critical role in the success in researching and developing medicines. If the implementation of this new immigration system is done wisely, the UK will be able to attract a great number of leading scientist and realize its vision of making it a “science superpower”.
